Ontario guidance
Built around Ontario rules
Kit wording is designed to match the marking items inspectors commonly check, from the system details you send. You stay responsible for the installation and for what your inspector and utility require. We make labels. We don't certify or inspect installations.
What ESA says about solar labels
ESA Bulletin 64-5-4, Installation of solar photovoltaic systems (issued May 2025), says Rules 2-100 and 84-024 require the labels, but the rules do not specify the wording. So use the wording from your drawings, your utility (LDC) or your inspector.
For the exterior, weatherproof labels that Section 84 calls for, the same bulletin says:
“The Code does not provide specific requirements; the labels need to be able to withstand the elements, be permanent and legible, for example: lamacoid, engraved metal plate, or equivalent. Additionally, the label has to satisfy the local supply authority requirements.”
Engraved laminate is one of the examples the bulletin gives. Read the ESA bulletin (PDF).
Kit wording is prepared to suit ESA Bulletin 64-5-4, the Canadian Electrical Code as adopted in Ontario, and your local utility's requirements, based on the system details you send — and you approve a proof before anything is engraved. Final acceptance is up to your inspector and utility, so we don't promise guaranteed compliance. This page is general information, not code advice. Bulletins are updated, so check the current version and confirm requirements with your inspector.

Lay out single plates in the online designer with a to-scale preview and a live price, then send the set to us for a proof. Single plates are priced by label size (from $5.00 each, $4.00 each at 10 or more small labels; see the rate card). The fixed-price kits are usually the better deal for a full set.

FAQ
Solar label questions
Does Ontario's ESA require lamacoid labels on solar PV systems?
Not by name. ESA Bulletin 64-5-4 (issued May 2025) says, for exterior labels required by Section 84, that labels need to withstand the elements and be permanent and legible — “for example: lamacoid, engraved metal plate, or equivalent” — and must also satisfy the local supply authority (utility) requirements. Lamacoid is an accepted example, not the only option. Always confirm wording and requirements with your inspector and local utility for the specific job.
Do you write the label wording for me?
You supply the wording for your job (from your drawings, utility requirements or your inspector). We'll lay it out, check it for obvious typos and send a proof before we engrave. We don't certify code compliance.
Do your solar label kits guarantee ESA compliance?
Kit wording is prepared to suit ESA Bulletin 64-5-4, the Canadian Electrical Code as adopted in Ontario, and your local utility's requirements, based on the system details you send — and you approve a proof before anything is engraved. Final acceptance is up to your inspector and utility, so we don't promise guaranteed compliance. Rules and utility requirements can change, so always check the current versions for your job.
How much do lamacoids cost and how fast can I get them?
Lamacoids are priced by the size of one label (CAD, before HST), with mounting holes and 3M #9502 adhesive included. Labels up to 6 in² (39 cm²) are $5.00 each, $4.00 each when you order 10 to 24 small labels, and $3.50 each at 25 or more. Larger labels are $0.95 per in² from 6 to 15 in², $0.75 per in² from 15 to 40 in², and $0.60 per in² over 40 in². For example, a 10 in² (65 cm²) label is $9.50, a 24 in² (155 cm²) label is $18.00 and a 70 in² (452 cm²) label is $42.00. Solar label kits are fixed price: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia package is $325 + HST. We send proofs fast and ship as quick as the next business day when you approve by 3 pm ET, with no rush fees. Use the online designer for a live estimate.
